Can someone please help me figure out why when you try to upgrade your win2000 server to 2003 your attempts to access the partition that has the OS is denied unlike before.  And also, why is it during the text-mode part of setup there is a probability of getting a stop error message that looks like this; STOP: 0x0000008E(0xC0000006, 0xFC99F5C0).

Hallo Bryan,

I will ask you to check and verify that the windows 2003 that you are using for the upgrade is indeed of the same version as the windows 2000 that is already installed on your computer.

If the windows 2000 is a 32 bit make sure that the windows 2003 is also a 32 bit, and if is a 64 bit, ensure the upgrade you are using is a 64 bit too. Otherwise the upgrade will not be successful and you will continue getting the error on each attempt of installation.

Hi Brian Cox,

This error code is the result of presence of Winnt.sif file. If it is configured as “repartition = yes”, then setup.exe file detects this format & removes all the existing data. Official Microsoft website also confirms the problem & accepts that it is the fault of their product. To avoid this problem, remove any disk that may contain Winnt.sif file from the floppy disk (optical drive). Now you can upgrade  your win2000 server to 2003 without any problem.
