“Cannot install Internet Explorer 8”

Hi experts,

I am using Internet Explorer 6. Every time I attempt to open IE, a window for a request for update pops up.  I usually ignore it because I have no problem using IE6.  Until recently wherein, IE quits unexpectedly at an abnormal recurrence, maybe 6 to 8 times a session.  I decided to download the update and install internet Explorer 8.  The download is successful.

The problem now is installing Internet Explorer.  Whenever I try to install, the installer hangs and eventually quits.  I tried 3 times already and I always get the same message telling me that “Internet Explorer encountered an error and needs to close”.    What is causing this problem?  Is it a virus or a corrupt installer file?

Thanks.

Hi Peter,

There could be several reasons why Internet Explorer 8 crashes during installation. It may be a virus and it may also be a corrupt installer. Aside from that it could also be due to little memory left while installing. Like I said, there could are several reasons.

The easiest and fastest way to fix it will be to:
Redownload IE 8 from Microsoft
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-8-details.aspx
Make sure that you are not using the internet too much as to cause any corrupted download
Close other programs including your antivirus
Install Internet Explorer 8
Reboot your computer

If for some reason your installation still fails;
Uninstall Internet Explorer 6 before installing Internet Explorer 8
Check if you still have sufficient space left in your Hard disk for another program
Run a virus scan
Run a scan for malware
Preferably run the two scans in Safe Mode

To Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart the computer
As soon as it starts or after you see the BIOS, press F8 maybe two or three times just to be sure.
You will then be taken to the Windows Advanced Options Menu.
Choose Safe Mode
Choose your operating system, if In case you have more than one.
Login as the Administrator
Enter Password if required and if you've set up one.
Run a Full Scan

If all else fails and there are no virus whatsoever, then I suggest you just go for Mozilla Firefox, which is way faster than Internet Explorer and has more features.

You can also go for Google Chrome which is a fast and simple browser, and slowly catching up to Mozilla Firefox.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Before  installing Internet Explorer 8 uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8. Close all open applications before installing or uninstalling IE8. I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's) before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. Create a "just in case" Restore Point manually before installing IE8.  Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8. For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 Final before you decide install it.
