Cannot access your scanner – Error Message

Hi all

I used a HP-5P scanner before with Win95.

Because of the errors in constant 95 systems, I upgraded to 98SE. But after installing paper port and 5P, the scanner will not start.

However Control panel confirms scanner icon but when it opened, the box displays that the scanner was not found. SCSI is standard.

When I was trying to scan test from HP software, I found an error message, "sorry cannot access your scanner, and your scanner is currently being accessed by another application. Please wait for the other application to close or close it".

Configuration is, Pentium 133, 32MB Ram and 2.1 gig of hard drive.

Only Norton antivirus #4 is installed among all others software but it was disabled in HP installation.

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hello Doriswneil! To fix this error, you have to delete the SCANJET.INF file and install the HPSCAN.INF. Sorry that I cannot give you screenshot because I no longer have 98SE. Delete the SCANJET.INF

1. Open your windows explorer. On the Menu bar, click View then Folder Options. Now click the View tab, select Show all files and remove the check mark from Hide file extensions for known file types then click Apply and OK.

2. Now on the Menu bar, click Tools, Find, Files or Folders. Now in the Named box type the file SCANJET.INF (be sure to check in C: partition and Include subfolders and click Find now.

3. Now highlight/select all copies of SCANJET.INF and press Delete key. Copy HPSCAN.INF 1. Open your CD-ROM drive using Windows Explorer containing the CD driver of HP Scanner. Copy the HPSCAN.INF and paste it on desktop or wherever you want to paste. Remove HP Scanjet

1. Go to your Device Manager, select View Devices by Type and click the + sign beyond the Scanjet scanner.

2. Double-click HP Scanner and a window will open. Click Drivers tab and then click Update Driver tab located at the bottom.

3. Select Yes and be sure the only box checked is the Specify Location. Now browse to where you pasted the HPSCAN.INF file and press OK and will Windows will now start updating the driver.

4. Insert the CD driver when prompted and press Enter.

5. After installation, restart your computer and try to scan now. If you don’t have a CD, do these steps.

1. Go to Device Manager>View Devices by Type and click the + sign again.

2. Double-click the HP Scanner. Click Drivers tab and click Update Driver.

3. Select Yes. Be sure the only box checked is the Specify Location. Again, browse to the HPSCAN.INF directory. Press OK and it will start the process.

4. When prompted to install the Windows 98 CD, just press Enter and an error message will appear. Click OK.

5. In the Copy Files From box, type C:WINDOWSOPTIONCABS and press Enter. It will now install the drivers.

6. After installing, restart the computer and you can now try to do a scan test.

Sorry again if I can’t provide a screenshot.
