I put a new disk in my laptop few days ago and the drive stopped appearing in My computer and Device Manger. I tried to restart the computer but this did not help can anyone help me? It is a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop if that helps.

Seems in my experience just like you need to open up system restore and go back to a previous restore point before the updates were set up. You may disable secondary IDE controller in the BIOS, whenever you make an effort to fix the herpes virus difficulty.

Right click on "My Computer" select " Properties " click on the "Hardware tab and click on the "Device Manager" button.
Device Manager go down to where it says "DVD/CD-ROM drives" go through the small box alongside that to open a drop-down list showing all CD and DVD drives connected to your computer . Right click on the drive which is giving you the trouble and click on uninstall, when asked to confirm device removal click OK.
shut down the computer as well as "Disconnect" the actual burner from the PC. After that re-boot the computer and watch for XP to be able to start-up and right after everything is up and running , shut it down computer again. and also re-connect the particular burner, Now start up the computer and wait for XP to detect the "new" drive and assign the proper driver.
