Blue screen and an error message: “0xC000021A”.

I am using a 500GB Western Digital USB 3.0 Hard Drive with Windows 8 installed on it. It is running on several computers and is working perfectly until yesterday. On start up, it shows the Win8 Boot screen but proceeds to show a blue screen and an error message: "0xC000021A".

I attempted to display Win8 Boot loader using the Options menu but get the same error message. This is common for all-in-one computers and have not yet seen it on a laptop. What could be the problem?

To resolve that problem, you will need to use the last known good configuration procedure as follows:

  1. On your computer you will click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  2. Choose the Restart option and then click OK.
  3. You will need to press F8 at the indicated time when the computer is booting.
  4. You will then need do use the arrow keys so as to choose the Last Known Good Configuration, and then you will press ENTER. You will have to ensure that NUM LOCK is off for the arrow keys on the numeric keypad to function.
  5. And then you will just use the arrow keys to be able to highlight an operating system, and then press ENTER.
