Which is the best Virus detection and removal software?

There is a wide range of free antivirus software available over the internet that caters to the different needs of different users. To say that there is one particular antivirus that is better than all the rest is next to impossible as all software have some downsides to them. Of course though there are those that stand out among the rest.
If you were to check sites that rate and review free antivirus software most if not all would recommend Avast Home Edition 6.0. Aside from its quick and easy installation to its scanning speed, Avast 6.0 is light years ahead of its competitors.
Other factors that make it number one is that the program itself is lightweight compared to its previous versions and only requires minimal memory to run. With all its speed Avast 6.0 did not sacrifice its effectiveness in detecting harmful programs that have infiltrated your computer system.
Other programs that are highly rated include Comodo antivirus boasts one of the best firewalls to keep intruders away, AVG antivirus 2011 Free Edition which is another lightweight program that doesn’t require a computer with high specifications to run, Avira AntiVirus Personal Free Antivirus 10, Panda Cloud Antivirus 1.0, Microsoft Security Essentials 2011 and many others.

Here's a list of freeware anti-viruses that I have tried and I truly recommend to other PC enthusiasts.
1. Avast! Free Antivirus – Great looking interface. Audio notifications. Has virus shields for Files, Web, Mail, P2P, IM, Script and behavioral analysis. It also has an automatic sandbox that protects the rest of your system if ever you decide to run an unknown EXE file. Updates are fast. Uses minimal resources so it doesn't slow down your system. I currently use this on my desktop and my netbook.
2. Avira Antivirus – Has the highest detection rate among all free antivirus software's. One turn-off is the nag screen every time it updates virus definitions. Another major turn-off is that it bundles Ask.com toolbar which turned off a lot of users because of its shady reputation. You can opt not to install the Ask.com toolbar though so it's fine really.
3. Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) – Microsoft's antivirus. Low on resources. It updates together with Windows update.
4. AVG Antivirus – One of the most popular antivirus software. Detection rate is on par with Avast! Antivirus.
5. Clamwin – Open- Source antivirus that has a Linux and Windows version.

By the way, don't get illegal versions of anti-viruses. The fact that they have been illegal indicates that something has already been compromised in the application's security.
