My 3rd generation ipod which I bought in July 2007 does not last long than 2 – 3 hours. The battery cannot be dead already to my knowledge. Explain what could be the reason for this?

Try the following fixes:

You will need to try calibrating the battery of the iPod. That means that you will need to fully charge the iPod, and then you will have to allow it to drain till it is completely empty. The iPod will power off on its own and then it will display a spinning progress indicator. After that, you will need to recharge the battery until it is completely full and them check if there is excessive battery drain after that.

You will also need to minimize some of the activities that you might be using the iPod for. For instance if you are using it for information transfer and listening to music at the same time it means that a lot of power will be consumed in the process.

If your iPod’s battery already drains fast, one possible reason is the applications you are using. There are stubborn apps that when launched and exited will stay running in the background and one example is the Safari web browser. Even if you press on the “Home” button to close it, it will stay running in the background.

If an app is running in the background, it adds to the battery consumption. It can also be a burden to your device since it keeps on running. This makes the device slower because they are left running but you are not using them. To terminate these stubborn apps, you need to force close them.

Open the app then press and hold the “Home” button until you are directed back to the app screen. That’s one way of reducing battery consumption. Another way to save battery is to turn off your iPod’s Wi-Fi when you are not using it. The Wi-Fi feature of any Smart device consumes a lot of battery draining it fast.

But still even if you take proper battery saving techniques, your iPod’s battery will still wear out soon just like any other manufactured battery. When your battery starts to deplete more rapidly than before even if you are not using it and no apps are running, it is probably time to service your device.
