My 3rd generation ipod which I bought in July 2007 does not last long than 2 – 3 hours. The battery cannot be dead already to my knowledge. Explain what could be the reason for this?

Even if you press on the “Home” button to close it, it will stay running in the background.
If an app is running in the background, it adds to the battery consumption. It can also be a burden to your device since it keeps on running. This makes the device slower because they are left running but you are not using them. To terminate these stubborn apps, you need to force close them.
