Can Mac convert rm files to mp3 automatically immediately media in rm format is received during transfer incase the mp3 format is set a default for mac or does the conversion process have to be initiated?

You can't automatically convert files after receiving a file. But instead, you can convert your file with some application for converting audio files. I recommend MediaHuman converter.

Rm format is the native format for Real Player. Real Player can be downloaded for free here.
Converting the files will work but as you will find it is a rather time consuming exercise.
It's just much easier to play the files "as is" than converting them.
Clementine is another alternative to Realplayer which can play just about any music format.
