You can use virtual servers in consolidating those 6 file servers, but first you should have an analysis whether your machine are capable for virtualization. After the preliminary checks are done, you can now make you virtual machine host. It’s up to you whether you convert your machines or just build new servers and transfer their several functions to them. But it would be better and easier if you’d just try the second solution. You can choose from different VMware, there are those that are for sale, but rather choose the one that is free but performs well, and is uncomplicated, if you are looking for cheaper ways.
