Hi Lyndon Miller,

Want to limit the access of unauthorized or should I say unwanted users? I know the feeling! Actually, it is pretty easy. Well, you can easily limit the access by creating your own user account, and limit the sharing of the file to other user accounts. Although you cannot lock it through a password, you can still lock it through denying the access of other users. Here is how to do it:

1.       Right-Click on the folder -> Click Properties

2.       Go to Security tab

3.       Click Edit

4.       Check the box of the options you want on the “deny column”.

5.       Click Yes when prompted.

Besides this, there is also another way than this. Download an application that locks your folder through a password. I suggest you use “Lock a Folder”.

It’s good to know that Windows 7 features an encryption method that allows you to set a password for your files and folders. This helps you prevent others from gaining access to your files and folders without knowing the password. Even if somebody accesses your hard drive, the user would not be able to access the password-protected folder without knowing first the local encryption password. Here’s how you can set the password on your files and folders:

  • Click Start then Computer. Browse for the folder you want to password-protect.
  • Right-click on that folder then select Properties.
  • Select General tab then click Advanced button.
  • Select or check Encrypt contents to secure data and then click OK.
  • To make sure that you can open it, double click on the file or folder.

Also remember, the password applied to the folder you password-protected is the same password you used on your Windows user account. If other users on the computer try to access the folder, the person should first enter your username and password to gain access to the folder. Otherwise, the folder is inaccessible. Password encryption is only available in NTFS file systems and is not supported on FAT32 file systems.
