Dear Yvonne S Gresham, I have read your query.

Yes, you are right, apple is about to launch a new iMac and Mac Pro this year, and there will be Retina Display used. According to a rumor new iMac equipped with Retina Display will be launched during coming October. In fact, according to a report, Apple Inc. is thinking about replacing display for their all devices with Retina Display.

As for Retina Display, well it is a brand name for Display used by Apple Inc. According to Apple, Retina Display have a high pixel density, and at a typical viewing distance a naked human eye is not able to detect individual pixels. So, everything looks sharper. Compared to previous displays used by Apple, Retina Display have four time the contrast. LED back lighting and an ambient light sensor are used to adjust the brightness. Another amazing thing about Retina Display is that its glass is made from the same materials used in helicopters and high speed trains and contains oil resistant coating.

Its major difference from a normal one is that it uses four times higher resolution.

Hope it helped.

Apple will introduce iMac computers with Retina Display probably in 2013, not in 2012. Apple has Macbook Pro with Retina Display. A small 13 inch Macbook Pro with Retina Display is expected this year. Retina Display is term given by Apple to high pixel density displays. Our naked eye cannot distinguish between them. The current Retina Display has a resolution of 2880×1800.
