Hello,

Any Android mobile phone can be used as a modem through usb tethering.  Android on smartphones brings the feature that will share your internet connection or act as a portable wireless router and also it can act as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.  Make sure also that your smartphone runs Android 2.2 or higher in order to have those features.  Let say you have a Samsung Galaxy S2, to tether that phone you need to go to the Menu and “Settings”. Then choose “Wireless and Network”  and now click on “Tethering and Portable Hotspot”. You can now choose either USB Tethering if you want your smartphone act as a modem while Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot settings will let you set your password for your Wi-Fi and then your smartphone will act as a mobile hotspot.  Once you’re done with the settings you can now share your internet using your mobile phone that runs Android OS. Most of the Android phones has the same steps in configuring Wi-Fi hotspot or usb tethering.

Android mobile phone as a modem or USB tethering?

An Android phone or simply a Smartphone doesn’t only help you do your mobile tasks and activities but you can also use it as a modem which you can then connect to a desktop computer or to a laptop allowing you to browse and surf different websites. This is what you call Android tethering. Tethering allows users to use any Smartphone as a wireless modem using its 3G feature to get connected to the internet.

Before you can actually use your Android phone as a modem, your Smartphone device should first be able to access and surf the internet. Meaning, your phone should have an active internet connection. If you don’t have an idea on how to configure your Smartphone’s internet connection or configuration, you should contact your service provider on how to setup your phone for internet access.

From your Smartphone, visit the Android Market. Search for the PdaNet application and then download and install it on your phone. It is free of charge. Next, download and install the compatible program for your PC. Search and click on June Fabrics, and select the correct settings for your computer. This program works on Windows XP 32-bit, Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit, Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit, and Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6.
