On September 3, 2013, Google unveiled to the public the Android 4.4 KitKat mobile operating system. It was released on October 31, 2013. The codename “KitKat” was originally dubbed as “Key Lime Pie” or KLP but because there were only few people who really know what a key lime pie tastes, the name was changed. Also, there were technology bloggers who expects that the Key Lime Pie release would be Android 5.

The recommended amount of RAM that a phone should have to run Android KitKat is 512 MB. The minimum RAM to run Android KitKat is 340 MB. From April 2009, all Android versions have been designed and released under a confectionery-theme codename. They are also released in alphabetical order starting with Android 1.5 Cupcake. The first two versions of the Android mobile operating system, Android 1.0 and Android 1.1, were not released under a specific codename.

Here’s a brief history of the Android operating system:

  • Cupcake – version 1.5
  • Donut – version 1.6
  • Eclair – version 2.0 until 2.1
  • Froyo – version 2.2 until 2.2.3
  • Gingerbread – version 2.3 until 2.3.7
  • Honeycomb – version 3.0 until 3.2.6
  • Ice Cream Sandwich – version 4.0 until 4.0.4
  • Jelly Bean – version 4.1 until 4.3.1
  • KitKat – versions 4.4 until 4.4.4, and 4.4W until 4.4W.2
  • Lollipop – version 5.0 until 5.1.1
  • Marshmallow – version 6.0
