The preview spider man movies came under a lot of criticism from critics and with the success of the avenger movies it was decided it was time for a reboot. So instead of making another Spider man that would be slated they decided to clear the slate and start again with a fresh cast and fresh story. However many reviews state that it is quite similar to the first Spider man and takes longer to tell the origin story.
