I have a older Macbook that keeps freezing up. I can boot it in safe mode and it shows a AHT error code. Is this a motherboard problem or hard drive going out? I really do not know much about these and not sure if it can be fixed cheaply.

Please try following these strategies,
  • Restart the device (since a refreshing reboot has the capability to fix certain system issues)
  • Follow the system updates regularly
  • Identify & remove the applications with issues
  • Deleting cache & other temporary files from the memory
If all the attempts prove useless, it is advisable to reset the default factory settings so that the device is freed from any processes related to the issue.

Further it can be that some of the internal parts might be wanting a replace or repair since you have stated that the device is quite old. So, contact for technical assistance.

Best Regards!
