What are the advantages and disadvantages of a Power over Ethernet or a POE switch?
Hello Jerry Kent,
Power over Ethernet switch has its advantages and disadvantages. First what are the advantages:
The only disadvantage in a PoE switch is the cost of installation of the required dedicated power for security and network devices. to reduce cost and increase reliability a new standard has been defined, PoE or 802.3af.
Hope this answer your question.
PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. It is a new technology where network equipments can operate without a power adapter or a power supply. The electrical power that supplies the network equipment is delivered using a regular Ethernet cable without affecting the speed of the data transfer in other way. You don’t necessarily need to replace the present equipment and or cables if they are still compatible with Cat5 Ethernet not unless they are that old and are incompatible.
Ethernet cables contain several twisted pairs of copper wires which are very thin and has very limited amount of power to carry. This kind of cable is really not designed to carry AC power or Alternating Current, the kind of power you get on your AC outlet. The PoE switch uses Direct Current or DC, just like in a battery, at voltages lesser than 50 volts.
