AC Adapter or Battery issue?

Whenever I plug my AC Adapter in, it gives me this message:

"The AC adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance. Strike F3 key (before F1 or F2 key) if you don't want to see power warning messages again. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility."

I don't have a spare AC adapter to check if mine is defective already. Please help.

We need to isolate if this issue is caused by your AC Adapter or your battery. Can you do the following:

1. Check AC adapter. Verify it is the original AC Adapter shipped with your system.
2. Unplug the A/C adapter from the wall, and from the portable computer, for five to ten seconds.
3. Make sure the AC adapter is unplugged long enough for the LED on the AC adapter to go out all together.
4. Take out the battery on the portable computer. For instructions on how to remove the battery see the Service Manual.
5. Plug the AC adapter into the wall outlet and to the system.
6. You may now power on your system.

Let me know if you get the same error message. Thanks!

Thank you so much for your quick response! The AC Adapter is still the original one, I got when I bought the laptop. I did all the steps you enumerated and unfortunately, it still gives me the same error after I restarted. So it's not my battery I assume, since we removed it from the equation. What could it be?

On a good note, at least you know your battery is good. Another possible cause for issues such as this is your computer's BIOS. An out of date BIOS can cause AC Adapter issues.

I would recommend that you update your BIOS by going to your computer manufacturer website to get the latest update. You maybe required to enter your laptop's serial / service tag to get updates specific to your computer. If this will not do the trick, you will then need to replace your AC Adapter. Keep me posted.

Thanks!

I had my geeky brother help me out with the BIOS update thing to make sure I did it right and wow, it actually worked! I am no longer getting the error and my battery is charging fine. I was actually preparing to get out of the house and buy me a new AC Adapter already as I have doubts about this solution.

I'm so glad I posted my problem here in techyv as it saved me a few bucks from getting a new AC adapter which may eventually give me the same error in the end. You have no idea how grateful I am for your help. Thanks Guru_angela! You are indeed a guru on these matters!
